Planted by the Romans, the Côte de Brouilly is the oldest Beaujolais vineyard. In 1857 was built the chapel to protect the vines from the oïdium devastation. Nowadays 4 priviledged villages produce this cru : Cercié, Saint Lager, Odenas, Quincié.
Climb the Mont Brouilly to discover the chapel, by the meaning time you will have understand this wine, and that it doesn't give way at ease. Ripped out of this unique blue schiste rock, it expresses all of its depth and strength. Complex, the nose asserts the mouth where the fruit notes are upholded by a remarquable minerality. Just a strong charactered wine!
Constantly the Côte de Brouilly wine-makers have to fight against erosion, they have to dig down the slope what they call perpendicular "rases", to limit the water dripping. They also spread straws between the rows. This AOC is dwelled on 320ha splitted between 80 wine-makers. Côte de Brouilly represents a small production of 16 000 hl or 2 millions of bottles a year.
Grape variety :Black Gamay white juice
The Terroirs :they are homogen overall slopes, geographic Terroir limits. The blue schiste rock has a unique aspect, it is hard poor acidic and volcanic . The composition of such rock is quartzite and diorite. This famous blue rock is also called "greenhorn" and this rock is the key to such distinctive wine.
Food matching : When young the Côte de Brouilly matches smoked poultry (duck, goose), grilled meats and cheeses. When older, the Côte de Brouilly goes with game in sauce dishes. Red meat dishes (boeuf Bourguignon).
